Third International Chesapeake Chamber Music Competition

EASTON, MD. The Third International Chesapeake Chamber Music Competition invites entries to compete in 2008 for a Gold Medal Prize of $10,000 to provide recognition for emerging professional chamber ensembles and to encourage younger musicians to follow a career in chamber music. It is one of the few chamber ensemble competitions of international stature that invites instruments of any kind and emphasizes performance opportunities. The application period closes November 30, 2007.

Participation is open to instrumental ensembles of 3 to 5 members, whose average age is less than 31 years. Finalists will compete at the Avalon Theatre in Easton, MD on March 29, 2008 and appear in concert performances on March 30, 2008.

The panel of distinguished judges who will choose the winners are internationally renowned clarinetist David Krakauer, pianist Diane Walsh, and cellist Marcy Rosen. Judges for the preliminary rounds who will select the five or six ensemble finalists will be chosen from the Competition's distinguished advisory panel.

The Competition is advised by a Panel of internationally-known musicians and educators: J. Lawrie Bloom, Catherine Cho, Leon Fleisher, Miriam Fried, Michael Kannen, Maria Lambros, Katherine Murdock, Peggy Pearson, Todd Phillips, Marcy Rosen, John Steinmetz, Diane Walsh, and Robert Yekovich.

Prizes include:

  • Gold Medal - $10,000 and performance at the Eastern Shore Chamber Music Festival in June 2008
  • Silver Medal - $5,000; additional awards of $3,000.
  • Presenting organizations will attend to consider finalists for other performances.

The Competition is a biennial event funded through private contributions and foundation grants. The very successful 2006 Competition drew entries from 50 ensembles in 15 different states and five European countries (Italy, Russia, Poland, Austria and the Czech Republic). The Judges were Ida Kavafian, Jean Barr and J. Lawrie Bloom. The David Trio of Italy won the Grand Prize of $10,000 and performance at the Eastern Shore Chamber Music Festival in June 2006. Finalists were from Italy, New York, California and Colorado and several received multiple invitations to appear in other concerts.

The Eastern Shore Chamber Music Festival, sponsor of the Competition, has brought outstanding musicians to perform at six concerts during two weeks in June at various sites throughout the Eastern Shore of Maryland for twenty-two years.
